Al & Gretchen Beatty's Fly Tying Fridays

Al and Gretchen Beatty of BT's Fly Fishing are hosting Fly Tying Fridays-- a Zoom get-together to watch and learn some new fly tying techniques.  These sessions will be held through March in into April.  See BVFF calendar for these events.

This week we’ll be sharing a method of mixing hackle-fiber tails with hair (or Poly) wings. “So, what’s the big deal about that,” you may be asking yourself? “Big” is actually the deal. It’s how to mix the larger bulk of a hair (or Poly) wing with the much-smaller volume of a hackle fiber tail while at the same time keeping the pattern’s body appearance seemingly balanced. The hair’s bulk has to go somewhere and we’ll show you how to deal with it AND for those of you who don’t tie with hair we’ll offer a really easy version of a Compara Dun from our book, EZY Trout Flies (available on Amazon or at btsflyfishing.com). By the way, be sure to check the Royal Coachman (HW) out in the picture with this post. It IS NOT a Royal Wulff! Take note of the tail in case you missed it at a first glance!

Materials Needed: Hackle fibers for a tail (golden pheasant, chicken hackle fibers, or feel free to substitute squirrel tail fibers, paint-brush bristles. Also consider muskrat, beaver, mink, or otter guard hairs ) – any will do the job. NOTE: We’ll be using calf hair (tail or body), deer hair, and Phentex Craft & Slipper Poly Yarn. Of course, you’ll need thread, dubbing, and hooks (we’ll use dry-fly size 10 for the demonstrations but #12 - #20 might be better for fishing flies.)

Royal Coachman (Hair Wing)

  • Hook: Dry, 1XL, size 20 – 8
  • Thread: White & black (6/0 – 70 denier)
  • Tail: Golden pheasant tips, bundle
  • Wings: Calf hair (tail or body), divided
  • Body: Peacock and red floss (in thirds)
  • Hackle: Brown
  • Head: Black thread

Compara Dun (Hair or Poly Wing)

  • Hook: Dry, 1XL, size 20 – 8
  • Thread: Gray (color of choice) (6/0 – 70 denier)
  • Tail: Hackle fibers (color of choice)
  • Rib: Optional thread, floss, or wire
  • Body: Gray dubbing (color of choice)
  • Wing: Deer body hair or Poly Yarn (color of choice)
  • Head: Thread

The presentation will be a standard Zoom meeting format and also be streamed live on our Facebook account (Gretchen-Al Beatty) where its recording will remain for 1 week. Join us at 6:00 PM (MDT) on Friday, 26Mar21. Please adjust for your time zone.
