Solving the Mysteries of Still Water Fly Fishing

Tom Governale

This presentation offers insight to solving the mysteries and challenges of still water fly fishing. Whether you are a beginner, or an experienced fly fisher wanting to expand your “fishing toolbox”, this presentation offers techniques and insight for successful still water fishing. Topics will include; reading and identifying different types of still water; fishing techniques; water conditions; weather conditions; where to fish; equipment and fly patterns. Discussion will cover techniques for cold and warm water fish species as well as fishing desert to high mountain lakes. Learn about reading water from land, fish movement, wind management, structure, aquatic insects, “the kitchen”, and use of differing lines.

Tom has lived in Boise since 1984. He claims to have started fishing before memory and has no consciousness of ever not fishing! He has a passion for pursuing fish with a flyrod – cold, warm and saltwater species. He is a non-discriminating fly fisher and divides his time between moving, still and cold and warm water. His fresh water catch list includes just about anything that swims - the five Pacific salmon, numerous trout species, grayling, whitefish, bass, bluegill, northern pike, carp catfish, garfish, rock bass, suckers, and many others.

Tom had a 36-year career in the Parks & Recreation profession before retiring from the City of Boise Parks & Recreation Department in 2017. Since 2017, Tom has been employed part-time by the Idaho Angler (by the way, The Idaho Angler is a multi-year Gold Level Sponsor of the Western Idaho Fly Fishing Expo) as a Customer Service/Sales person, Casting, Fishing and Catching Instructor and Guide.
