These events are sponsored by BVFF members Al & Gretchen Beatty

Greeting to those of you on the BT's Fly Tying Friday watch list. We are once again joining our good friends at Project Healing Waters - Omaha to tie flies. We hope you join us and the good folks at Project Healing Waters. The presentation information is below:

The Beattys are joining Project Healing Waters in Omaha on two evenings, 6 October and 20 October 2022 at 5:00 PM (1700) Mountain Time. Both events are Tuff'n EZY type presentations. On 6 Oct 22, Gretchen will present the Tuff''n Lime Trude and on 20 Oct 22, Al will present the Tuff'n EZY Humpy. The recipes for each are as follows:

Lime Trude Materials

  • Hook: 1X-long dry-fly hook, size 8 to 18
  • Thread: Lime or black (6/0 – 70 denier)
  • Tail: Squirrel tail, elk body, or moose body hair
  • Rib: Fine copper wire (optional)
  • Abdomen: Lime poly yarn
  • Thorax: Peacock herl
  • Wing: White calf tail OR white poly yarn
  • Hackle: Brown

Tying Notes: Gretchen considers this one of her “foundation flies” which means it’s a general design upon which she builds other patterns by changing hook size and material colors. It is a must-have pattern in any western USA fly box. When tying your Lime Trude, be sure to note how she deals with “the hill.” You will find it THE solution for many fly-tying situations.

Standard or Poly Humpy

  • Hook: 1X-long dry-fly hook, size 8 to 22
  • Thread: Floss or thread, color of choice)
  • Tail: Moose body hair
  • Body: Tying floss/thread (color of choice)
  • Wings: Elk body hair or poly yarn
  • Hump: Elk body hair or poly yarn
  • Hackle: Brown (color of choice), tied full
  • Head: Thread
  • Strands of Poly per size: #8-10 = 3, #12-14 = 2, #16 = 1, #18-22 = .5

Tying Notes: Al has considered this pattern to be one of his “must-have” patterns whether guiding clients or fishing for fun. The Beattys carry a duffle bag with multiple 18 compartment boxes in which they have no less than several dozen Poly Humpies in a range of sizes and colors. It really is one of their Go-To flies and has produced fish for them all over the world.
