The Whitefish Derby is a great reason to get out on the river in the winter and practice your nymphing skills.  “Getting Out” is the primary objective, but we do have a fishing competition for Largest Whitefish, and for the most Whitefish caught.  The largest number of whitefish caught – is on the honor system (and a few pictures don’t hurt).   Largest Whitefish – Keep the fish, but don’t bring back any fish less than 14 inches.  Of course, if you want to keep and eat whitefish that is up to you.

2012 was my first Whitefish Derby.  This was a whiteout snow storm day.  I thought these people were Crazy!  Amazingly once you are in the river with a fish in the net, the cold doesn’t matter anymore.  In 2013, we had a bluebird day, in the upper 30’s, sunshine, and no Wind.  The Whitefish Derby got a bit misdirected as people switched to casting dry flies to rising rainbow trout.

Other Details:  Check for any changes on the BVFF website.  We will post a time and meeting place for Carpooling from Boise.  If you are not a member, sign up for membership on-line ($25/year) so you can compete for Derby prizes.  Membership allows you access to the Members Only web pages.  The Members List gives you an easy way to get in touch with other fishers.

Registration:  Register for the event on-line so we know how much chili and dogs to have on hand.  If you register on line, you will receive a raffle ticket.  This is the only way to get a raffle ticket for a fabulous prize that is separate from the Whitefish Derby prizes.  And yes you DO have to be present to win.

Contacts: Tom McKnight, blastncastid@gmail.com, or Steve Bauer, steveboise6@gmail.com regarding any questions, or if you want to volunteer with the event.
